چکیده

Length of stay is a key factor in the management and development of the tourism industry and represents an important issue of debate for the economic literature [1, 2, 3]. Due to its importance for the economy, data on the average length of stay of travellers are collected by public and private agencies in several countries of the world, at different geographical resolutions. When considering official tourism statistics, it is important to point out that the statistical definition of tourism is broader than the common, everyday definition, because it encompasses not only private travel but also business travel. This is the case, for instance, of the definition of tourism given by Eurostat [4]. Similarly, tourism surveys of several countries cover a wide range of travel purposes, including holiday, but not limited to it: people travelling to visit relatives and friends, or for educational purposes, are also included in the statistics. This is primarily because the agencies view tourism from an economic perspective. Many of the statistical datasets are publicly available and can be downloaded from the internet. They usually provide the average length of stay of travellers in a defined country, along with the travellers’ country of origin, purpose of visit and local destination. Even if data do not provide information at the individual level, all the available statistical sources show that the length of stay of travellers around the world is broadly distributed, usually spanning several orders of magnitude in time. Moreover, the length of stay varies between different geographic locations within the same country. In the following subsections we list the main sources of our empirical findings, organized by reporting country.

Heterogeneous length of stay of hosts’ movements and spatial epidemic spread

Infectious diseases outbreaks are often characterized by a spatial component induced by hosts' distribution, mobility, and interactions. Spatial models that incorporate hosts' movements are being used to describe these processes, to investigate the conditions for propagation, and to predict the spatial spread. Several assumptions are being considered to model hosts' movements, ranging from perm...

Seasonal and spatial heterogeneities in host and vector abundances impact the spatiotemporal spread of bluetongue

Bluetongue (BT) can cause severe livestock losses and large direct and indirect costs for farmers. To propose targeted control strategies as alternative to massive vaccination, there is a need to better understand how BT virus spread in space and time according to local characteristics of host and vector populations. Our objective was to assess, using a modelling approach, how spatiotemporal he...

Human mobility and time spent at destination: impact on spatial epidemic spreading.

Host mobility plays a fundamental role in the spatial spread of infectious diseases. Previous theoretical works based on the integration of network theory into the metapopulation framework have shown that the heterogeneities that characterize real mobility networks favor the propagation of epidemics. Nevertheless, the studies conducted so far assumed the mobility process to be either Markovian ...

Reconstructing a spatially heterogeneous epidemic: Characterising the geographic spread of 2009 A/H1N1pdm infection in England

Understanding how the geographic distribution of and movements within a population influence the spatial spread of infections is crucial for the design of interventions to curb transmission. Existing knowledge is typically based on results from simulation studies whereas analyses of real data remain sparse. The main difficulty in quantifying the spatial pattern of disease spread is the paucity ...

SPOT PATTERNS IN GRAY SCOTT MODEL WITH APPLICATION TO EPIDEMIC CONTROL

In this work, we analyse a pair of two-dimensional coupled reaction-diusion equations known as the Gray-Scott model, in which spot patterns have been observed. We focus on stationary patterns, and begin by deriving the asymptotic scaling of the parameters and variables necessary for the analysis of these patterns. A complete bifurcation study of these solutions is presented. The main mathematic...
